Lafite, the wine that everyone knows
Speaking of the '82 Lafite, I'm sure everyone is familiar with it. There are countless memes and movie references about it, and today I'm going to tell you more.
Lafite red wine's standing among red wines is unquestionable, holding the record for the most expensive bottle of wine in the world. This record was first set in 1985 by Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President.
The origin of Lafite:
"Lafite" comes from the LaFite family, the former owners of the land where Château Lafite Rothschild now stands. It means "small hill," aptly describing the hilly terrain of the Lafite vineyard. Château Lafite was founded in 1354 by a nobleman named Lafite and gained significant renown in the 14th century. In 1868, Baron James de Rothschild acquired it at a public auction for the astronomical sum of 4.4 million francs, and the family has owned Château Lafite ever since.
What is Lafite:
The term "Lafite" has three meanings. Firstly, "Lafite" refers to the world-renowned Château Lafite Rothschild.
Secondly, "Lafite" refers to the Grand Vin produced by Château Lafite Rothschild—Château Lafite Rothschild (also known as "Grand Lafite")—and its second wine—Carruades de Lafite (also known as "Petit Lafite").
Thirdly, "Lafite" refers to the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group, which belongs to the illustrious Rothschild family.
Grand Lafite:
The Grand Vin of Lafite, also known as First Wine, is the top-tier product of Château Lafite Rothschild and represents the essence of the estate. Its label is shown below. Note the name "Château Lafite Rothschild." The arrow emblem on the shoulder of Lafite bottles was added after 1996; earlier bottles did not feature this arrow.

Petit Lafite:
Carruades de Lafite, the second wine, comes from a century-old renowned estate like Lafite, which naturally considers the quality of its output. However, if the vines are not mature enough to produce Grand Lafite, or if there are flaws in the production of the Grand Vin, these wines will be designated as second wines, or made from grapes from neighboring vineyards (within the same village). Their price is significantly lower than the Grand Vin, and their taste is only slightly inferior, so Petit Lafite caters to a specific consumer group. The label is shown below. Note the name "Carruades de Lafite" and the colored horizontal strip beneath the capsule; the bottle itself does not have an arrow emblem.
The grape cultivation at Château Lafite uses very traditional methods, essentially avoiding chemical agents and fertilizers. Grapes are carefully hand-tended and only picked when fully ripe. During harvest, skilled workers perform an initial selection on the vines, leaving any subpar grapes unpicked. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a second selection by highly skilled technicians before pressing, ensuring that every grape pressed meets high-quality standards.
It takes 2 to 3 grapevines to produce one 750ml bottle of wine. To protect these precious vines, Château Lafite generally does not allow visitors without special permission from the head office.
In addition, Château Lafite is known for its willingness to invest heavily in hiring the best winemaking masters. Lafite wines are characterized by their gentle and delicate, rather introverted personality, unlike the robust character of two other famous estates from Pauillac, Latour and Mouton Rothschild. Lafite's prominent floral and fruity aromas, along with its mellow and smooth taste, lead many wine enthusiasts to call it the "Queen" of the wine kingdom.
Why is it that among all the wines produced by Château Lafite over many years, only "the '82 Lafite" truly became world-renowned?
In winemaking, there are only two most important factors: the superior quality of the raw material—grapes—and the winemaking craftsmanship once the grapes are harvested.
The year 1982 was a truly exceptional year, with all natural environmental conditions perfectly suited for grape growth. The grapes produced that year were of the highest quality in many years.
With such excellent "先天條件" (innate conditions), combined with Château Lafite's extremely superior winemaking craftsmanship, the wine made from grapes harvested in 1982 naturally had the highest quality in many years.
Scarcity drives value. Every time a bottle of Lafite 1982 is consumed, the number of existing Lafite 1982 bottles decreases, leading to a further imbalance in supply and demand. Consequently, the remaining Lafite 1982 bottles will continue to appreciate in value. As a result, fewer and fewer people will be able to afford it, and its consumption rate will slow down. The current market price is approximately fifty thousand yuan.
