[Hong Kong Red Wine Collection Case Study] Embracing a New Chapter: High-Priced Acquisition of Original Cases and Loose Bottles of Classic Vintage Lafite

Many homes harbor a few bottles of fine wine. Perhaps they were gifts from clients or souvenirs of memorable celebrations. However, with shifting life priorities, these esteemed wines sometimes need to find a new home.

I am an appraiser at Debourg (Recycling Cases), and today I want to share a recent real-life recycling story completed in the Mid-Levels of Hong Kong. This time, we acquired a batch of well-preserved classic vintage Lafite (Château Lafite Rothschild), including original wooden cases with special markings and several carefully stored loose bottles.

The Origin

  • Seller Information: Mr. Chan, 45, a senior executive at a financial institution in Central.
  • Reason for Sale: Mr. Chan's family is expecting their second child next month. To create more safe play space for the newborn and their energetic older child, Mr. Chan and his wife decided to conduct a thorough "decluttering" of their home. While clearing storage in the living room and study, he looked at the collection of top-tier red wines accumulated over the years in his wine cabinet and realized that due to his focus on family in recent years, he rarely hosted wine parties or indulged in drinks at home. To prevent potential accidents from children accidentally bumping into the wine cabinet while playing, and to ensure these fine wines receive better professional storage and appreciation, he decided to contact us for recycling.

Before Opening the Bottles: Our Due Diligence

When we arrived at Mr. Chan's residence, he had already carefully removed the red wine from the wine cabinet. Most of these Lafite bottles were business gifts he had received years ago.

The most striking was undoubtedly the case of 2008 vintage original wooden case Lafite, which, once opened, was cushioned with purple tissue paper. 2008 was a special vintage for Château Lafite; to commemorate its deep ties with China, the winery specially incorporated the red Chinese character "八" (bā, meaning eight) into the label design. This is not only a lucky number but also gives this vintage of Lafite extremely high collection and circulation value in the Asian market.

In addition to the original case, Mr. Chan also presented several loose bottles of Lafite. Given Hong Kong's humid climate, Mr. Chan had meticulously wrapped each bottle in cling film (as shown in the picture) to protect the labels from dampness and mold. This is a very professional home storage tip and saved us a lot of effort during the appraisal.

During the appraisal, we carefully inspected each bottle using a professional flashlight, checking for:

  1. Fill Level: The fill level of all wines remained at an excellent position (Neck), indicating no leakage or excessive evaporation.
  2. Capsule and Cork: The capsules were flat and free of bulging, proving that the red wine had not experienced drastic temperature changes.
  3. Label: Thanks to the protection of the cling film, the labels of the 2004, 2005 (with the classic scales motif), 2006, and 2008 vintages were still clear, pristine white, and free of significant damage.

Recycling Product Information Overview

After detailed inventory and valuation, we have organized the specific information of this batch of Lafite as follows:

Brand/Château Region Vintage Specification Packaging Condition Special Markings/Label Features
Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux, France 2008 750ml Original Wooden Case (OWC) Red Chinese character "八" on bottle
Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux, France 2008 750ml Loose bottle Red Chinese character "八" on bottle
Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux, France 2006 750ml Loose bottle Classic Lafite label
Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux, France 2005 750ml Loose bottle Label with scales motif
Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux, France 2004 750ml Loose bottle Classic Lafite label

Note: All loose bottles were covered with cling film by the original owner for moisture protection, and the labels were in excellent condition.

After a half-hour professional evaluation, we provided Mr. Chan with a very competitive recycling offer. Mr. Chan was extremely satisfied with our offer and the professional, transparent evaluation process. Cash settlement was completed on the spot. Looking at the now empty wine cabinet area, Mr. Chan smiled and said, "There's just enough space here for the baby's playpen now."

A Few Things You Might Want to Know

To help more friends like Mr. Chan with idle red wines understand our services, we have compiled the following frequently asked questions:

Q1: I only have loose bottles of red wine, no original wooden cases. Do you still recycle them? A: Absolutely. While original wooden cases (OWC) usually fetch a slightly higher price in the market than loose bottles, as long as your loose red wines are from well-known wineries (such as Lafite, Mouton, Margaux, Conti, etc.) and are in good condition (normal fill level, label, capsule), we will still purchase them at a high price.

Q2: How do you evaluate the recycling price of red wine? A: Debourg's quotes are based on real-time international red wine trading market data. We comprehensively consider four dimensions: winery reputation, vintage rating, packaging integrity (original case or loose bottle), and preservation condition (fill level, whether the label is moldy/damaged, whether the capsule is intact).

Q3: What is the transaction process? Do I need to bring the wine to you myself? A: We offer an extremely convenient service. You just need to send clear photos of your red wine to us via WhatsApp or WeChat, and we will provide an initial valuation. If the price is satisfactory, we offer free door-to-door recycling service throughout Hong Kong. After on-site appraisal, settlement is immediately made in cash or via Faster Payment System (FPS). You do not need to personally transport the heavy bottles.

Q4: The label on my red wine is a bit moldy. Can I still sell it? A: Yes, you can. Due to Hong Kong's humid climate, slight mold on labels is common. As long as it does not hinder the identification of the vintage and winery, and the wine's seal and fill level are fine, we will still recycle it. However, the price will be slightly adjusted based on the condition. We recommend wrapping bottles in cling film for moisture protection, as Mr. Chan did.
