Sell Lafite Original Loose Bottles Wine
Many people have a few good bottles of wine hidden away at home. Perhaps they were gifts from clients, or souvenirs from a memorable celebration. However, as life's priorities shift, these fine wines sometimes need to find new homes.
I am an appraiser at Dibao Wine (a buyback case study), and today I'd like to share a real buyback story that recently took place in Hong Kong's Mid-Levels. We acquired a batch of classic vintage Lafite (Château Lafite Rothschild) that was exceptionally well-preserved. This included collections in original wooden cases with special markings, as well as several carefully stored loose bottles.
The Origin
- Seller Information: Mr. Chan, 45, a senior executive at a financial institution in Central.
- Reason for Selling: Mr. Chan's family is expecting their second child next month. To create more safe space for the upcoming baby and their active first child, Mr. Chan and his wife decided to thoroughly declutter their home. While clearing out storage space in the living room and study, he looked at the top-tier red wines accumulated in his wine cabinet over the years and realized that, due to his focus on family in recent years, he rarely hosted wine parties or indulged in drinks at home anymore. To prevent potential hazards from children accidentally bumping into the wine cabinet while playing, and to ensure these fine wines receive better professional storage and appreciation, he decided to contact us for buyback.
Pre-Appraisal Work
When we arrived at Mr. Chan's residence, he had already carefully taken the red wines out of the wine cabinet. Most of these Lafites were business gifts he had received in his earlier years.
The most eye-catching was undoubtedly the case of 2008 vintage Lafite in its original wooden case, lined with purple tissue paper when opened. 2008 was a special year for Château Lafite, as the winery specially used the red Chinese character "" (bā, meaning eight) as part of the label design to commemorate its deep connection with China. This is not only a lucky number but also gives this vintage of Lafite extremely high collection and circulation value in the Asian market.

In addition to the original case, Mr. Chan also presented several loose bottles of Lafite. Given Hong Kong's humid climate, Mr. Chan meticulously wrapped the bottles in multiple layers of plastic wrap to protect the labels from dampness and mold (as shown in the image). This is a very professional small tip for home preservation and saved us a lot of effort during the appraisal.

During the appraisal process, we carefully examined each bottle using a professional flashlight for:
- Fill Level: All wines maintained an excellent fill level at the neck, indicating no leakage or excessive evaporation.
- Capsule and Cork: The capsules were flat and not bulging, proving that the red wine had not experienced drastic temperature changes.
- Label: Thanks to the protection of the plastic wrap, the labels for the 2004, 2005 (with the classic scales emblem), 2006, and 2008 vintages were still clear, pristine, and without significant damage.
Buyback Product Information Summary
After a detailed inventory and valuation, we have compiled the specific information for this batch of Lafite as follows:

| Chateau Lafite Rothschild | Bordeaux, France | 2008 | 750ml | Original Wooden Case (OWC) | Red "" (eight) character on the bottle |

Note: All loose bottles came with anti-humidity plastic wrap added by the original owner, and the labels were in excellent condition.
After half an hour of professional assessment, we offered Mr. Chan a very sincere buyback quote. Mr. Chan was very satisfied with our quote and our professional, transparent appraisal process, and both parties immediately completed the cash settlement. Looking at the now empty wine cabinet area, Mr. Chan smiled and said, "There's just enough space here for a baby playpen now."
A Few Things You Might Want to Know
To help more friends like Mr. Chan who have idle red wines understand our services, we have compiled the following frequently asked questions:
Q1: I only have loose bottles of red wine, not original wooden cases. Will you still buyback them? A: Absolutely. While original wooden cases (OWC) usually fetch a slightly higher price in the market than loose bottles, as long as your loose red wines are from well-known wineries (such as Lafite, Mouton, Margaux, Romanée-Conti, etc.) and are in good condition (normal fill level, label, and capsule), we will still Buy them at a high price.
Q2: How do you assess the buyback price of red wine? A: Dibao Wine's quotations are based on real-time international red wine trading market data. We consider four dimensions: winery reputation, vintage rating, packaging integrity (original case or loose bottle), and storage condition (fill level, whether the label is moldy/damaged, whether the capsule is intact).
Q3: What is the transaction process like? Do I need to bring the wine to you myself? A: We offer an extremely convenient service. You just need to send clear photos of your red wine to us via WhatsApp or WeChat, and we will provide an initial estimate. Once you are satisfied with the price, we offer free doorstep buyback service across Hong Kong. After on-site appraisal, payment will be settled immediately in cash or via Faster Payment System (FPS). You don't need to transport heavy bottles yourself.
Q4: The label on my red wine is a bit moldy. Can I still sell it? A: Yes, you can. Due to Hong Kong's humid climate, slight mold on labels is a common phenomenon. As long as it doesn't affect the readability of the vintage and winery, and the wine's seal and fill level are fine, we will still buyback it, though the price may be slightly adjusted based on the condition. We recommend wrapping the bottles in plastic wrap to prevent moisture, similar to what Mr. Chan did.
