Penfolds produces one of two French products in partnership with the Bordeaux winery Dourthe. Peter I'm Livin 'it Gago, the chief winemaker of Benfu Winery, and Ric Bonnafous, the chief winemaker of Duer Winery, worked together to blend grape varieties from Bordeaux (71%) and South Australia (29%). wine.

Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said of the partnership: "This is the beginning of our French winemaking journey. Our main goal is to follow the winemaking ethos of both wineries and deliver the best blend possible. A wine that makes Bordeaux and South Australia proud. It blends to express an ethereal lightness and subtlety - a masterful marriage of old world and new world."
Patrick Jestin, CEO of Château Duf, said the wine “exceeded all our expectations.” Justin said the wine combines traditional French winemaking techniques with time-honored Australian winemaking methods, staying true to "the culture and style of our respective countries and families".
"Pushing boundaries and craftsmanship, this fusion is an unexpected and completely captivating concept," he added. Working with the Penfolds Winemaking team and cultivating strong friendships to blend such great wines is a dream come true. For us, this is groundbreaking, resulting in a completely original and innovative wine - Penfolds II. "
The second wine, the 2019 Penfolds FWT 585, will be released in August: an experimental wine made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The experimental wine was made at Cambon la Pelouse with the help of Emma Wood, Penfolds’ senior winemaker.
Speaking about the first French wines, Piet Gago said: "The wines made in France respect the French terroir, but all remain consistent on one thing: the Penfolds seal. Just like our California wines, we have the French sun on top, and the French sun on the bottom." There is soil, but everything in between is Penfolds.”
