Why was Lafite bought in 1982 so expensive?
With so many wines, why is Lafite the most famous? With so much Lafite, why is the 1982 vintage the most expensive?
Of course, Lafite's brand marketing and promotion are prerequisites for its popularity, and Hong Kong films such as "Exiled," "Young and Dangerous," "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," and "God of Gamblers" also boosted the 1982 Lafite. However, even without this hype, the year 1982 indeed possessed a "magical" power that elevated Lafite to an iconic status.

1. What year is the wine from?
When it comes to the vintage of wine, many people answer "the year the wine was born." While this is technically true, it takes several years, or even more than a decade, from grape harvesting to winemaking and finally aging and bottling. So, what year is the wine's "birth year"?
The wine's vintage indeed represents its "age," but this age refers to what we often call the "nominal age," which is the year the grapes were harvested.
The vintage is so important, on the one hand, because it represents the climate of that year, which to some extent reflects the quality of the wine; on the other hand, it also tells us whether the wine has aged and if it has reached its optimal drinking period.

2. Why are there good vintages and bad vintages?
If the climate and environment vary every year, leading to good and bad vintages for wine, then why does the concept of vintage only exist for wine?
For crops like wheat, soybeans, and sorghum that we eat every day, why do we never distinguish between vintages? This question can be answered by looking at some of the "distorted" rules of the Old World of wine.
Insiders know that to respect local conditions and regional characteristics, the Old World of wine has established a series of laws and regulations regarding grape cultivation and winemaking.
To faithfully reflect the weather conditions of each year, even in years with very unfavorable climates, wineries are absolutely not allowed to improve the quality of grapes through artificial means. Thus, the growth of grapes each year can only be "determined by fate." Under this system, where production relies on the whims of nature, good vintages become even more precious.
Take the famous 1982 vintage as an example. Bordeaux had perfect climatic conditions for grape ripening that year – a hot but not dry summer, which allowed the grapes to achieve excellent ripeness; and sunny and rain-free harvest season, ensuring that the grapes could be harvested at their optimal state. As a result, 1982 became Bordeaux's "vintage of the century" in 50 years, and a high price for it is perfectly reasonable.
