The Birth of the Artist Label—A “V” for Victory

Château Mouton Rothschild's union of wine and art is one of its best-known innovations. Baron Philippe de Rothschild first commissioned graphic designer Jean Carlu for the 1924 label, but the annual tradition of inviting a contemporary artist took shape around one historic vintage: 1945.

With the war in Europe ending in 1945, Château Mouton Rothschild commissioned French illustrator Philippe Jullian to create a label bearing a “V” for victory. It commemorated the end of the Second World War and opened a new artistic era for the estate. Thereafter, apart from 1953 and 1977, Mouton invited an artist in almost every year to create a unique label for Château Mouton Rothschild.

A gallery of masters across generations

Because the artwork changes each year, Mouton is one of the few wines whose vintage can often be recognised from its label. The collaborators form a compact history of modern art, including Miró, Picasso, Bacon and Dalí.

Market mythology—“The Golden Ram” and highly rated vintages

The source links Mouton's artist-label tradition with liquidity and price differentiation on the secondary market. Special themes and notable artists may attract extra attention, but neither an artwork nor a past gain guarantees future appreciation.

1. A millennial collectible: the 2000 “Golden Ram”

For the millennium, Mouton departed from its normal label format. The 2000 bottle features the Augsburg Ram, a silver-gilt drinking vessel made in 1590 by German goldsmith Jakob Schenauer and held in the château museum. Its image was engraved directly into the glass rather than printed on a conventional paper label. Liv-ex data cited by the source show that the 2000 vintage ranked second by traded value in 2020, at 9.5%. By the same 2020 snapshot, its value had risen by about 11 times, with a last trade of £18,240 per case, 1054% above release. These are explicitly historical 2020 figures, not a current price or a forecast.

2. Asian interest: labels by Chinese artists

The source says Asian demand has been especially strong for vintages featuring Asian artists and supplies only the 2018 Xu Bing label as an example, with no supporting price series or further discussion.

3. The combined appeal of quality and art

Artwork matters most when paired with the wine. Mouton is associated with a full, flamboyant Cabernet-led style, with blackcurrant, roasted coffee and cigar notes and firm tannins. A highly rated vintage with a sought-after label may attract added collector interest, but the source supplies no vintage list in this section.

Vertical collections and bottle condition

Collectors sometimes assemble a vertical collection of many vintages from one estate. Mouton's different label for every year gives such a group the character of an art gallery as well as a wine collection.

A Mouton vertical from 1945 to 2008 sold for €51,750 in 2012, according to the source, above the then-current €42,495 sum of iDealwine's individual-bottle estimates. This dated example shows a historical set premium; it does not establish one for another collection.

Dibao Wine's perspective—reviewing an art-linked wine collection

Mouton's reputation combines a powerful, ageworthy wine with a singular artist-label tradition. That makes it distinctive among Bordeaux first growths, while future appreciation remains uncertain.
