How much does a frequent red wine drinker know about Cabernet Sauvignon?

For those who love wine, Cabernet Sauvignon is widely recognized as the first lesson in understanding wine. As the most famous grape variety in the world, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys a unique status in the world of wine. But do you really know enough about Cabernet Sauvignon?

Extensive Cultivation Area

Based on vineyard area, Cabernet Sauvignon is undoubtedly No.1: there are currently 262,000 hectares (650,000 acres) of land planted with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes worldwide! You can find traces of Cabernet Sauvignon in almost all major wine regions.

Resilient Vitality

There's a reason why Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted grape variety in the world: its adaptability is extremely strong. In the arid eastern region of Washington State, USA, with an annual rainfall of only 20 inches, Cabernet Sauvignon still grows well and has received praise from many wine critics. In China's Gobi Desert region, some wineries also plant Cabernet Sauvignon grapes locally.

As can be seen from the table above, Cabernet Sauvignon's strong vitality allows it to maintain a dominant position in both the Old World and the New World.

Higher Yields

If we compare the world's most expensive Cabernet Sauvignon wine – Bordeaux's Chateau Latour – with the world's most expensive Pinot Noir wine – Romanee Conti – we will find that Cabernet Sauvignon's yield is astonishingly high. At Romanee Conti, only about 1 ton of Pinot Noir grapes can be produced per hectare of vineyard; whereas at Chateau Latour, about 3.5 tons of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes can be produced per hectare of vineyard!

However, to ensure the quality and flavor of the wine, many regions limit the yield of Cabernet Sauvignon. For example, in Bordeaux, the law stipulates that each hectare of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard can only produce no more than 50,000 liters of wine. With the continuous warming climate, wineries now have to put more effort into controlling yields, otherwise, it is easy to exceed the legal limits.
