Sell Lafite Rothschild Wine Introduction
Speaking of the 1982 Lafite, I'm sure everyone is familiar with it, as there are many memes and movie references about it. Today, I'll tell you more about it.
Lafite's status among red wines is unquestionable; it holds the record for the most expensive bottle of wine in the world. This record was first set in 1985 by the third US President, Thomas Jefferson.
The Origin of Lafite:
"Lafite" comes from the LaFite family, who once owned the land where Château Lafite Rothschild now stands, meaning "little hill," vividly describing the hilly terrain of the Lafite vineyard. Château Lafite was founded by a nobleman named Lafite in 1354 and gained immense renown in the 14th century. In 1868, Sir James de Rothschild acquired it at a public auction for the astronomical sum of 4.4 million francs, and the family has owned Château Lafite ever since.
What is Lafite:
"Lafite" has three meanings. Firstly, "Lafite" refers to the world-renowned Château Lafite Rothschild.
Secondly, "Lafite" refers to the Grand Vin produced by Château Lafite Rothschild, also known as Château Lafite Rothschild (or "Grand Lafite"), and its second wine, Carruades de Lafite (also known as "Petit Lafite").
Thirdly, "Lafite" refers to the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) group, which belongs to the illustrious Rothschild family.
Grand Lafite:
The Grand Vin of Lafite, Château Lafite Rothschild, refers to the top product of Château Lafite, representing the winery's flagship wine, also known as the first-label wine or main wine. Its label is shown below. Note the wine name: Château Lafite Rothschild. The arrow emblem on the shoulder of Lafite bottles was added after 1996; bottles prior to that year did not have it.
Petit Lafite:
Carruades de Lafite, the second wine of Lafite. Lafite is a centuries-old renowned estate, and naturally, it considers the quality of its production. However, when the grapevines are not yet suitable for producing Grand Lafite, or if imperfections occur during the production of the Grand Vin, these wines will be designated as the second wine, or made from grapes grown in adjacent vineyards (within the same village). The price is much lower than the Grand Vin, and the taste is only slightly inferior, so Petit Lafite satisfies certain consumer groups. Its label is shown below. Note the name Carruades de Lafite, as well as the colored horizontal stripe below the capsule, and the absence of an arrow emblem on the bottle body.
Château Lafite's grape cultivation employs very traditional methods, essentially avoiding chemical agents and fertilizers, and meticulously hand-nurturing the grapes until they are fully ripe before harvesting. During harvest, skilled workers conduct an initial selection of grapes on the vine, picking only the best. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a second, more advanced selection by technical staff before pressing, ensuring that every pressed grape meets high-quality standards.
Each 750ml bottle of wine requires 2 to 3 grapevines. To protect these precious vines, Château Lafite generally does not allow visitors without special arrangements from the head office.
Furthermore, Château Lafite is a renowned estate famous for investing heavily in hiring the best winemaking masters. Lafite wines are known for their gentle, delicate, and rather introverted character, unlike the strong personalities of the other two famous estates from Pauillac, Latour and Mouton Rothschild. Lafite's prominent floral and fruity aromas, along with its mellow and smooth taste, lead many wine lovers to call Lafite the "Queen" of the wine kingdom.
Why is it that among all the wines produced by Château Lafite over many years, only "the 1982 Lafite" truly resonated worldwide?
In winemaking, there are only two crucial aspects: the quality of the raw material—grapes—and the winemaking craftsmanship after obtaining the grapes.
The year 1982 was truly a "chosen year," with all natural environmental conditions perfectly suited for grape growth. The grapes produced that year were also of the highest quality in many years.
With such superior "" (innate conditions), coupled with Château Lafite's exceptionally skilled winemaking, the wine made from grapes harvested in 1982 naturally achieved the highest quality in many years.
Scarcity drives value. Every time a bottle of 1982 Lafite is consumed, the number of existing 1982 Lafite bottles decreases, leading to a further imbalance in supply and demand. Consequently, the remaining 1982 Lafite will continue to rise in price. This, in turn, means fewer and fewer people can afford it, and its consumption rate will slow down. The current market price is approximately fifty thousand yuan.
