In Hong Kong's fine-wine secondary market, a bottle can carry a story about time, wealth and taste. In this Dibao case study, one of the most memorable collections involved the 2000 Lafite(Château Lafite Rothschild 2000), a landmark millennium vintage.
This account follows the assessment of that case and the human story behind the owner's decision to sell.
On a Tuesday the previous week, Mr Lam, a long-standing client, called us. A partner at a Central law firm and an experienced wine collector, he was preparing to move overseas and had decided to reduce part of his long-held cellar.
At his Mid-Levels home, the indicator on a temperature-controlled cellar glowed in the dim corridor. From the centre of the cabinet, Mr Lam carefully removed an original wooden case (OWC) of Château Lafite Rothschild 2000.
'I bought this case at a British auction house in 2003 and shipped it directly to Hong Kong. It has not moved since,' Mr Lam said. 'The millennium meant a great deal to me; it was the year my career began. I had planned to open it when my daughter married, but the move came together quickly. I cannot take these bottles with me, and I feel most comfortable leaving them with you.'
The case appeared exceptionally well preserved: high fill levels, clean and intact labels, and clear security marks. For a wine of this level, documented provenance and strong condition are important components of value.

The Seller and His Reason for Selling

Why Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 Remains Closely Followed
For Lafite, 2000 was more than a change of calendar: it is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux's major vintages.
The assessment considered not only the bottles but also their cellar history. Mr Lam supplied purchase records and temperature-controlled storage documentation. In this case, that provenance and consistency supported a higher offer than comparable loose bottles without the same record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What most affects the value of Château Lafite Rothschild? A. In addition to the vintage, ullage is critical. If a 2000 bottle has fallen to shoulder level, its value may be materially reduced. The source says an OWC can carry a 10%-15% premium over loose bottles, but the effect is not automatic and depends on the complete case, provenance and current buyer demand.
Q2. Will small mould spots on the label affect the offer? A. Hong Kong's humid climate means light cellar mould is common on mature-wine labels, including a 2000 Lafite. Limited spotting need not be decisive if the label is intact, but mould alone does not prove good storage. We assess the scale of damage together with fill, seal, provenance and the rest of the bottle.
Q3. Must I bring the wine to your premises? A. No. We offer appointment-based assessment across Hong Kong. You can first send photographs by WhatsApp. If the preliminary range is of interest, an assessor can arrange an in-person inspection. Available settlement methods, including cash, FPS or cheque, are confirmed before an accepted transaction.
