Pétrus: A Pomerol Legend

Pétrus needs little introduction. It is the leading estate in Pomerol on Bordeaux’s Right Bank; the appellation has no classification, and Pétrus requires none for its status to be recognised.

Pétrus is distinguished by its soil. The estate sits on a unique clay plateau and makes its wine from almost 100% Merlot, producing a full, rich wine with a velvet-smooth texture that is appealing when young and becomes more complex with age. Annual production is only about 30,000 bottles, very little for a leading estate.

The Secret of the Blue Clay

Pomerol covers only about 800 hectares, far less than the Médoc, yet its geology is extremely complex and soils can change completely within a few dozen metres. Beneath the Pétrus site lies a rare layer of blue clay, or argile bleue, several metres thick and identified by geologists as sediment from an ancient seabed tens of millions of years old.

The clay has two key properties: exceptional water retention and, during drought, an ability to force vine roots deeper. Merlot therefore develops a concentration and minerality that are almost impossible to reproduce elsewhere. Other Pomerol estates such as Le Pin and Vieux Château Certan also have good clay, but the purity and position of the Pétrus parcel are widely regarded as superior.

The spellings “Petrus” and “Petrvs” both appear in market listings and on labels. This guide does not assign a change year because the available evidence does not establish one; use the spelling, vintage and provenance shown on the actual bottle for assessment.

Why Merlot Rather Than Cabernet Sauvignon?

The Left Bank First Growths rely primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon for tannic structure and long ageing. In Right Bank Pomerol, heavier clay and slightly warmer conditions are better suited to early-ripening, fruit-rich Merlot.

Pétrus uses almost 100% Merlot, unusual among top Bordeaux estates. This uncompromising expression of the variety gives the wine singular richness: as full as liquid velvet, yet with structure and depth, and still vibrant after three or four decades.

Which Vintages Are Most Sought After?

Pétrus has very few genuinely poor vintages, but 1990, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2016 are among the most sought after. Older years such as 1961 and 1982 are exceptionally rare and can attract strong quotations.

How Does Dibao Wine Assess Pétrus?

Counterfeit Pétrus occasionally appears on the market, so inspection is especially careful. In addition to fill level, label and capsule, Dibao Wine checks base markings and cork details. Key points include:

Capsule: Pétrus capsules changed subtly over time, from lead on older vintages to tin foil on newer ones. Counterfeits often fail on this detail.

Label Paper: authentic label paper has a slightly rough feel and an off-white rather than pure-white colour. A label that looks too new or too smooth warrants closer attention.

Fill Level: the standard Pétrus fill is in the upper to mid neck. A slight fall is normal in a bottle over 20 years old, but a level below the shoulder requires careful assessment.
