Domaine de la Romanée-Conti: At the Summit of the Wine World

After many years in fine-wine buyback, DRC remains at the very top: exceptional Burgundy terroir, extremely low yields and exacting viticulture. Romanée-Conti itself produces only about 6,000 bottles a year, making even current releases difficult to obtain and older vintages rarer still.

Why Does DRC Command These Prices? From Terroir to Philosophy

DRC’s prices can appear extraordinary, but there are concrete reasons behind them. Romanée-Conti covers only 1.81 hectares and La Tâche just 6.06 hectares. In Burgundy, terroir is not merely a marketing term: vineyards on opposite sides of the same village road can produce completely different wines.

DRC adopted fully organic viticulture in 1985 and moved to biodynamics (Biodynamie) in 1997, ploughing with its own horses and scheduling vineyard work by lunar cycles. These practices directly reduce production: DRC’s yield per unit area is less than half that of neighbouring estates, while concentrating flavour and complexity.

Unlike Bordeaux estates, DRC does not operate an en-primeur system. Buyers generally obtain the wines only through appointed distributors or the secondary market. Across the past 20 years, the historical auction record shows long-term price growth, but not a continuous rise or a forecast for any current bottle.

DRC Vintage Guide: Which Years Command the Most?

Not every DRC vintage attracts the same demand. The following groups help place a bottle in the market:

Benchmark vintages at the top of the auction market: 1945, 1959, 1978, 1990 and 2005. Romanée-Conti from these years can exceed HK$1 million at auction and may remain unavailable even to willing buyers.

Widely collected vintages with established market demand: 1999, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2019. Their quality is widely recognised, circulation is comparatively practical and institutional collectors frequently hold these vintages.

Strong vintages in their drinking window: 2002, 2007 and 2012. The wines are sound but nearing their mature peak, with comparatively accessible prices and demand from buyers seeking bottles to drink.

Even less celebrated DRC vintages may attract interest when condition and provenance are sound; no vintage or bottle is assigned value without bottle-specific evidence and inspection.
