Christopher Rosen Penfolds, the founder of Penfolds, was a young English doctor born in 1811. The youngest of 11 children, Dr Penfold studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. Like other doctors of his time, he firmly believed in wine's medicinal value. In 1844, Dr Penfold emigrated to Australia with his wife, bought the Magill Estate in South Australia, and brought vine cuttings from southern France to Adelaide. Mrs Penfold managed the garden, vineyards and winemaking. The first variety planted was Grenache, and the resulting wine was used mainly as a tonic for patients with anaemia, giving Penfolds the moniker “1844, Enduring Ever Since.”

In 1845, Dr Penfold and his wife planted vines brought from France at Magill, outside Adelaide. To continue the vine-growing traditions of southern France, they built a stone cottage amid the vines. They called the small cottage “Grange,” meaning a farmstead, and the name later became associated with Penfolds' best-known Grange series. Described as the king of Australian wine and one of the world's twelve leading wines, the limited-production series is sought by many collectors. In that simple stone cottage, Dr Penfold established his medical laboratory and began making fortified wine for his patients. As demand for wine increased in subsequent years, he gradually expanded the vineyard area and production.

By 1870, the Grange vineyard had expanded to 60 mu (about 4 hectares) and was planted with many varieties, including Grenache, Verdelho, Mourvèdre and Pedro Ximénez. The winery produced sweet wine, dry red wine and dry white wine, with Victoria and New South Wales as its principal markets. Dr Penfold died in 1880, after which his wife Mary took over the winery.

As the business grew, Mary Penfold managed the winery with her son-in-law Thomas Hyland and cellar manager Joseph Gillard. Under Mary Penfold's careful direction, the winery continued to expand. 35 years after its founding, Penfolds accounted for 30% of South Australia's wine output. It also had 120 acres under vine and was the largest winery in South Australia. Penfolds became a household name across Australia. Mary, who made a major contribution to the Australian wine industry, died in 1896. Her children continued to run the winery until the Second World War. During this period, Penfolds reached its peak and came close to dominating the Australian wine market.

Peter Gago became Penfolds' chief winemaker in 2002. By then, Penfolds wines were sold around the world and the name had become widely familiar. Among the wines released in this period, the 2004 Bin 42 and Bin 60A were particularly distinguished. In 2010, Penfolds released its Bin 23 red wine made from Pinot Noir for the first time. The Penfolds portfolio spans a broad range of market needs, with a style intended to reflect Australia's generous national character.
For 150 years, Penfolds has maintained a consistent commitment to quality and winemaking. It remains one of the leaders of the Australian wine industry today.

A wine's value should not be forgotten in the corner of a cabinet.
